Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. Scott was raised an all-only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. Scott completed her secondary school education and also worked at two different positions. Her dream was to be an English High School teacher. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying her goal of becoming a high-school English teacher was cut short. She began her career as a spoken-word performer, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. The singer performed at an Roots concert. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. In the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
