Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. She came out during an Roots concert. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained more experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent.
