Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school while also working at two other positions. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she dropped out of high school. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. Through a Roots show, she revealed her artist status. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she was able to gain experience in performing arts through the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
