Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. Scott was raised an all-only daughter of her grandmother. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She took secondary school classes there while working two jobs. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. She was unable to fulfill her dream, however, when after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant, she quit college. She started her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. During the Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
