Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. Her dream was to become an English teacher at high school. However, her dream was in vain when she left the college after a year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. She began her career as a spoken-word performer who performed her work during poetry readings. Then she teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. Her first public appearance was in the midst of a Roots Show. In the following years, she managed to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign to Hidden Beach Recordings.
