Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two different job. She was hoping to be a English teacher at high school. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she dropped out of high school. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. During an Roots show she was spotted as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience in performing in the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
