Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 April 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation her school, she went to Temple University. While working two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher in Temple University. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. When she began her professional career, singing at poetry events and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together as well as co-writing You Got Me. She came out during a Roots performance. After that, she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was a performer in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
