Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th, 1972. Being a single girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of study and being an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. A poet by trade She began to sing in live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. At the Roots show, she revealed her artist status. In the following years, she managed to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
