Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. Being a single girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two jobs, she studied secondary education. Her dream was to be a English High School teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. She began her career by performing live poems and writing her own material. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. Through the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Following that, she started collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. During the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was also the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
